In short
Quest 3 is the volume mixed-reality buy: XR2 Gen 2, higher per-eye panel than Quest 2 / 3S, color passthrough, optional PC Link. It is not a Vision Pro, and it is not Quest 3S. Above-120 Hz refresh up to 240 Hz is a Quest 3 exclusive on Horizon OS developer notes.
Who it is for
- Buyers who want Meta’s current pancake headset and the Quest Store / Horizon OS library, with optional PC Link.
- Quest 2 owners upgrading for color passthrough, XR2 Gen 2, 8 GB, and 2064×2208 panels (developer table).
- People choosing 3 over 3S for the compare-page 110° horizontal FOV and the higher physical panel, not for a different chip generation.
Who should skip it
- Shoppers who only want the cheaper Fresnel-class 3S. Same XR2 Gen 2 generation; different optics, FOV claim, and panel.
- Anyone who needs a published IPD range or headset grams from Meta’s developer table — those cells are not on that page.
- Buyers who refuse a Meta account. Meta’s own Quest 2 tech-specs footnote still says a Meta account is required for use.
Key differentiators
- Developer table: 2064×2208 per eye vs Quest 2 1832×1920; depth sensor yes vs no; color high-res passthrough vs grayscale.
- Consumer compare (indexed): 110° horizontal FOV; full-color passthrough 4MP / 18 PPD; 8 GB.
- Horizon OS developer note: refresh above 120 Hz up to 240 Hz is Quest 3 exclusive — do not attribute it to 3S.
Caveats
- meta.com/quest/quest-3/, /quest-3s/, /compare/, and several help URLs returned HTTP 400 from this write environment. Numbers below come from Meta developer documentation and the indexed compare/tech-specs snippets. Date the live store again.
- No invented battery minutes, nits, or comfort scores.
- Quest 2 remains a valid sibling hub even though Meta’s tech-specs page says it is no longer available.

Overview
Quest 3 is the current pancake Meta headset. Sibling hubs: /vr/meta-quest-3s/, /vr/meta-quest-2/, /vr/meta-quest-pro/, /vr/meta-quest-1/. 3DoF ancestor: /vr/oculus-go/.
Meta’s own developer table is the cleanest numeric source we could open. The consumer store and compare HTML returned HTTP 400 here. Where we use compare-page FOV or 18 PPD, we label that as an indexed snippet, not a live parse.
Display and FOV
- Panel: 2064 × 2208 per eye (physical).
- Render default: 1680 × 1760 at scale 1.0.
- Refresh: 72 / 80 / 90 / 120 Hz on the 3 vs 2 table; >120 up to 240 Hz is Quest 3 only.
- FOV: 110° horizontal on the indexed compare page. No vertical number in that snippet.
Passthrough and tracking
Developer table: full color, high resolution; depth sensor yes. Compare snippet: 4MP, 18 PPD. Quest 2 is grayscale / low resolution / no depth on that same table. That is the upgrade story — not a clarity score we measured.
Controllers, input, tether
Standalone first. Controllers are the Quest family pattern. PC is optional (Link / Air-class wireless). Not a PS5 cable headset. IPD and weight are not on the developer table — the cells stay “not published” rather than blog numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Quest 3 the same panel as Quest 3S?
No. Meta’s render-scale table: Quest 3 2064×2208 per eye; Quest 3S 1832×1920 per eye (same physical number as Quest 2).
Does Quest 3 have eye tracking?
Not on the Quest 3 vs Quest 2 developer table. Do not invent it.
What is the FOV?
The consumer compare page, as indexed, lists 110° horizontal for Quest 3. We did not get a clean vertical number from that snippet. We do not invent one.
Can I use it with a PC?
Optionally, via Meta’s Link / wireless PC features. It is a standalone headset first. Confirm the live Link document before quoting latency or GPU minimums.
Why is there no price?
Because the Meta storefront was not readable on write day. Inventing $599.99 would violate the OEM-only rule.
