In short

PS VR2 is a PS5 OLED headset first and a SteamVR headset only with Sony’s PC adapter. It is not standalone, not Quest Store, and not backward compatible with original PS VR games. FOV is “approx. 110°” — Sony’s word, not a lab measurement.

Who it is for

  • PS5 owners who want OLED HDR VR, eye tracking, headset haptics, and Sense adaptive triggers in first-party and PS VR2 catalog games.
  • PC VR users willing to buy the official PC adapter + DisplayPort 1.4 cable and meet Sony’s minimum PC spec.
  • Original PS VR owners who understand Sony’s no-backward-compatibility rule and are shopping an upgrade, not a library transfer.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone without a PS5 (or a qualifying PC + adapter). The headset is not standalone.
  • Players who need original PS VR game compatibility. Sony: not compatible.
  • Buyers who want color mixed-reality computing like Quest 3 or Vision Pro. See-Through View is a camera peek, not an MR platform.
  • Children under 12. Sony: headset is not for use by children under age 12.

Key differentiators

  • OLED 2000×2040 per eye, 90/120 Hz, approx. 110° FOV, HDR (Sony FAQ).
  • Inside-out cameras + IR eye tracking + headset vibration; USB-C to PS5, ~4.5 m cable.
  • Sense controllers: haptics, adaptive triggers, finger touch, ~168 g, BT 5.1, in the box.
  • Optional official PC adapter for SteamVR — subsection, not a second product in the H1.

Caveats

  • Launch $549.99 is 2023 RRP. Do not print it as a 2026 street price.
  • See-Through View is viewing only; Sony says no recording option.
  • PC path needs adapter + DP 1.4 (not DP-over-USB-C) + USB 3.0 + Bluetooth 4.0+. DisplayPort cable sold separately.
  • No hands-on testing.

Overview

PlayStation VR2 is a tethered headset. The H1 is one product. The PC adapter is an extras row and an H2, not a third device.

Sibling hub for the 2016 headset: /vr/playstation-vr/ (CUH-ZVR1). Sony: original PS VR games are not compatible.

Display and FOV

OLED, 2000 × 2040 per eye, 90 / 120 Hz, FOV approx. 110°. HDR in both VR and Cinematic modes per the FAQ. Original PS VR on Sony’s own table is 960 × 1080, approx. 100°, approx. 600 g.

Passthrough vs MR

See-Through View is a camera peek. Sony: viewing only, no recording. Do not write “PS VR2 has Quest 3 passthrough.”

Controllers and tether

Sense pair in the box (~168 g, BT 5.1, haptics, adaptive triggers, finger touch). DualSense for setup and some games. USB-C to PS5, about 4.5 m. No headset battery hours — the visor is powered by the cable.

PC adapter (not a second H1)

Sony’s support page is the source: Windows 10/11, listed CPU/GPU floors, DisplayPort 1.4 (not DP-over-USB-C), USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0+, Steam + SteamVR + PS VR2 App. Adapter required; DP cable sold separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does PS VR2 play original PS VR games?

No. Sony states original PlayStation VR games are not compatible with PS VR2.

Does it work without a PS5?

Not as a standalone headset. The native path is USB-C to PS5. The PC path needs Sony’s official adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, and Sony’s published minimum PC.

What is the FOV?

Sony publishes approximately 110 degrees. We keep “approximately.”

Is See-Through View mixed reality?

Sony describes it as a way to see your room (for example to find a controller). It is viewing only, with no recording. That is not Quest-style color MR computing.

Is $549.99 today’s price?

It is Sony’s February 2023 recommended retail. We did not re-date a 2026 Sony shop ticket. Re-check before you quote.

Age limit?

Sony: not for children under 12.
