Cookie Notice
This notice explains the cookies and similar technologies used on GadgetShowdown, what they do and how you can control them. Read it with our Privacy Policy.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Sites use cookies to work properly, to remember your choices and, with advertising partners, to show and measure ads. Similar technologies include local storage and session storage, which keep small pieces of data on your device, and tags that load from another company’s servers.
Cookies on this site
| Category | What it does | Set by | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps the site secure and available, for example security checks and load balancing. | Our host or CDN, when they need to | Set by the provider; usually short-lived |
| Preferences | Remembers the language and color theme you pick, and keeps the site’s menus and labels in your language while you browse. | GadgetShowdown: the gs_locale cookie; the gs-locale and gs-theme keys in local storage; gs-i18n: keys in session storage | gs_locale: about one year. Local storage: until you clear it. Session storage: until you close the tab. |
| Advertising | Lets Google and its partners show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ads and, where allowed, personalize them. | Google and partner ad vendors, through the Google AdSense script | Set by Google; see How Google uses cookies |
| Affiliate | Records that you came from GadgetShowdown when you follow a link to Amazon, so a purchase can be credited to us. | Amazon, on its own website after you click | Set by Amazon |
We don’t use analytics cookies: the site doesn’t run Google Analytics or any other analytics service. The preference cookie and local storage keys hold only the language or theme you picked, such as en or de; session storage holds a copy of the site’s menus and labels in that language.
How to control cookies
- Your browser: block or delete cookies, or use a private window. If you block all cookies, some security checks may fail and the site won’t remember your language.
- Personalized ads from Google: turn them off in Google’s Ads Settings.
- Other ad vendors: opt out at www.aboutads.info/choices or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- European Economic Area, UK and Switzerland: Google uses cookies for personalized ads only with your consent, collected through a consent message that Google certifies.
- Amazon: cookies set after you follow a link are controlled by Amazon and your browser.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
This site doesn’t change how it works in response to Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. Use the controls above to opt out of personalized ads. The Privacy Policy explains your rights under U.S. state privacy laws.
