In short

Surface Pro 9 is Microsoft’s October 2022 leftover 13-inch PixelSense Flow slate: 12th Gen Intel or SQ 3 5G, Slim Pen 2 sold separately, 47.7 Wh. Buy leftover if you want the Intel/ARM choice year before Core Ultra and Snapdragon 11th Edition. Skip it if you want current Copilot+ Surface Pro (11th Edition).

Who it is for

  • Leftover shoppers who want a 13-inch Windows 11 kickstand tablet with a choice of 12th Gen Intel (Thunderbolt 4) or SQ 3 5G before Core Ultra Pro 10 and Snapdragon 11th Edition.
  • Pen users who will buy Surface Slim Pen 2. Microsoft: storage/charging lives in compatible keyboards, not in the tablet slab.
  • Color-sensitive Intel shoppers: Sapphire, Forest, Platinum, Graphite. SQ 3 / 5G is Platinum on the Support exterior row.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who wants the current Surface Pro. That is Surface Pro (11th Edition) at /tablets/microsoft-surface-pro-11th-edition/.
  • Buyers who want iPadOS, an in-box stylus, or a sub-500 g carry. Support lists 879 g Intel / 883 g 5G without keyboard.
  • People who need a published IP code or a nits figure. The Support page we pulled prints neither.

Key differentiators

  • 13-inch PixelSense Flow, 3:2, 2880 × 1920, 267 ppi, dynamic refresh up to 120 Hz; Gorilla Glass 5; contrast 1200:1. Dolby Vision IQ is listed on Intel/Wi-Fi, not on the SQ 3 display block.
  • Two processor families on one slug: Intel Core i5-1235U / i7-1255U (Evo on 256GB+) with Thunderbolt 4, or Microsoft SQ 3 5G with USB-C 3.2 and GNSS.
  • Battery Capacity Nominal 47.7 Wh / Min 46.5 Wh on both families. Typical-use claims: up to 15.5 hours Intel, up to 19 hours SQ 3.
  • Windows 11 Home (consumer) or Pro (commercial); SQ 3 ships Windows 11 on ARM.

Caveats

  • Battery hours are Microsoft test claims at 150 nits (August 2022 preproduction footnotes). We have not lab-tested Pro 9.
  • A US launch dollar start is not in the Devices Blog paragraphs we pulled. Do not paste a reviewer’s $999.99 as OEM MSRP.
  • Peak brightness in nits is not on the Support spec table we pulled. Do not invent 600 nits from Pro 10.
  • Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 are sold separately. In-box power-supply wattage is not printed.
  • Microsoft product photography is not hosted here.

Overview

Surface Pro 9 is Microsoft’s October 2022 13-inch kickstand slate — the year Intel and SQ 3 / 5G shared one Surface Pro name. Current Surface Pro sell-in is 11th Edition. This hub stays so leftover shoppers have a tablets-v1 record instead of mixing 12th Gen / SQ 3 rows with later Core Ultra or Snapdragon X sheets.

We have not used this tablet. 15.5- / 19-hour typical-use lines stay Microsoft claims.

Frequently asked questions

Is this still the current Surface Pro?

No. Current Surface Pro on 19 September 2026 is Surface Pro (11th Edition) Snapdragon. Keep this slug as the leftover Intel / SQ 3 choice year.

Intel or ARM?

Both. Intel 12th Gen i5-1235U / i7-1255U with Thunderbolt 4, or Microsoft SQ 3 with 5G and Windows 11 on ARM. Do not flatten one family onto the other.
