In short

iPad Pro (M4) is the May 2024 tandem-OLED slate: M4, 8/16GB by storage, four speakers, Thunderbolt, $999 / $1,299 US Wi-Fi launch. Buy it used or leftover for the same XDR panel as M5 at a lower street ticket. Skip it if you specifically want M5’s 12GB memory floor, N1/C1X, or Wi-Fi 7.

Who it is for

  • Buyers shopping leftover or refurb M4 Pro who want tandem OLED XDR, Thunderbolt, Face ID, LiDAR, and Pencil Pro hover — the same panel table as M5.
  • Illustration / video users who will use Magic Keyboard and one external display up to 6K/60 Hz.
  • Cellular travelers who accept the 2024 5G eSIM modem (not Apple’s later C1X).
  • Anyone comparing M4 vs M5 on memory floor and radios, not on case size — the 11/13 mm and gram tables match M5.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who wants Apple’s current Pro silicon and radios. That is iPad Pro (M5): 12GB on 256/512GB, N1 Wi-Fi 7 / Bluetooth 6 / Thread, C1X, published fast-charge table.
  • Buyers who need a compact 8.3-inch tablet. Pro is 11.1-inch / 13-inch class, 444–582 g before a keyboard.
  • People who want an IP-rated slate. Apple does not publish an IP code on the M4 Support sheets.
  • Sub-$700 shoppers. Air (M4) starts at $599; iPad (A16) at $349.

Key differentiators

  • First iPad Pro Ultra Retina XDR tandem OLED — ProMotion 10–120 Hz, 1000 nits full-screen SDR/HDR, 1600 nits peak HDR. M5 did not republish a brighter nits table.
  • M4 with 8GB unified memory on 256/512GB and 16GB on 1TB/2TB; 120GB/s memory bandwidth (M5 Support lists 153GB/s).
  • Thunderbolt / USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s) plus one external display up to 6K/60 Hz — Air/mini stay USB 3.
  • Four-speaker audio, studio-quality four-mic array, Face ID, LiDAR, optional nano-texture on 1TB/2TB.

Caveats

  • Every nits, battery-hour, and Newsroom performance line is an Apple claim. GadgetShowdown has not lab-tested M4 iPad Pro.
  • This is a previous-generation Pro. Street prices and Apple-refurb stock change. Re-check apple.com and the Support sheets on write day.
  • Pencil, Magic Keyboard, and nano-texture glass are sold separately (nano-texture is a 1TB/2TB glass option).
  • Apple product photography is not hosted here.

Overview

iPad Pro with M4 is the May 2024 Pro — the first tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR slate. The physical product is still two sizes: 11-inch (5.3 mm, 444/446 g) and 13-inch (5.1 mm, 579/582 g) in silver or space black. Apple’s current Pro sell-in on 19 September 2026 is M5. This hub exists so leftover and refurb shoppers, and the vs mesh, have an OEM first table instead of retailer bullets.

We have not used this iPad. Newsroom “world’s most advanced display” and M4 Neural Engine superlatives stay labeled as Apple claims.

Display, chip, and speakers

The XDR panel table matches M5 Support: tandem OLED, ProMotion 10–120 Hz, 264 ppi, 1000/1600 nits, 2,000,000:1 contrast. Nano-texture is still a 1TB/2TB option.

M4 is the silicon story. 256/512GB machines are 9-core CPU / 8GB / 120GB/s. 1TB/2TB are 10-core CPU / 16GB / 120GB/s. Speakers are four-speaker audio with a four-mic array — keep those keys.

Pencil, keyboard, cellular

Same Pencil Pro + USB-C + hover sentence as M5. Keyboard is Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, sold separately. Cellular is 5G eSIM — not C1X.

Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3. Do not copy N1 / Wi-Fi 7 from the M5 or Air (M4) hubs onto this first table.

Frequently asked questions

Is M4 still the current iPad Pro?

No. iPad Pro (M5) was announced 15 October 2025. This hub stays as the previous Pro so leftover / refurb shoppers have an honest tablets-v1 record. Do not overwrite this slug with M5.

What actually changed on M5?

Apple’s M5 Support/Newsroom points to a higher memory floor on 256/512GB (12GB vs 8GB), N1 Wi-Fi 7 / Bluetooth 6 / Thread, C1X on cellular models, faster storage, 153GB/s memory bandwidth, and a published fast-charge table. The tandem OLED XDR nits table, 11/13 sizes, Face ID, LiDAR, four speakers, and Pencil Pro path carry over.

Does M4 have Wi-Fi 7?

No. Support lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi 7 / Bluetooth 6 / Thread via N1 is on M5 Pro and on iPad Air (M4).

How much RAM does the $999 SKU have?

Apple publishes 8GB on 256GB and 512GB M4 Pro. 1TB/2TB are 16GB. Do not invent 12GB on the cheap M4 SKU.
