In short

iPad (7th generation) is the September 2019 $329 leftover first 10.2-inch Retina slate: A10 Fusion, Lightning, first Smart Keyboard on the entry line, 32/128GB. Buy leftover if you want the first 10.2-inch Home-button iPad. Skip it if you want A12 Neural Engine (8th gen) or USB-C (10th gen / A16).

Who it is for

  • Leftover / refurb shoppers who still want the first 10.2-inch Home-button iPad with Lightning, a 3.5 mm jack, Smart Connector, and Pencil 1st gen.
  • People comparing 7th vs 8th gen on silicon (A10 Fusion vs A12 Neural Engine), front camera (1.2MP 720p on both leftover sheets), and Newsroom recycled-aluminum wording (7th gen first).

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who wants the current base iPad. That is iPad (A16) at /tablets/ipad-a16/.
  • Buyers who want Neural Engine on the entry line. That starts at iPad (8th generation).
  • People who want USB-C or 5G. That starts at iPad (10th generation).

Key differentiators

  • Newsroom: first entry iPad with a 10.2-inch Retina display and full-size Smart Keyboard support.
  • A10 Fusion + M10. No Neural Engine row on Support 111911 — that starts on 8th gen.
  • 32GB or 128GB only. Gold / Silver / Space Gray.
  • Newsroom: first iPad enclosure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. Lightning + 3.5 mm + Smart Connector + Home-button Touch ID.

Caveats

  • 500 nits and 10-hour battery lines are Apple claims from Support 111911 testing footnotes (August 2019).
  • In-box USB Power Adapter wattage is not printed. Do not invent 12W or 20W from later boxes.
  • RAM is not published. Do not invent 3GB from a teardown.
  • True Tone / P3 / full lamination are not on the Support 111911 display block we pulled.
  • Apple product photography is not hosted here.
