Quick Answer

Series 12 and Ultra 4 launched together on 9 September 2026 and share the S11 SiP, Health Sensing System, readiness score, and watchOS 27. Series 12 is the everyday watch: 42mm or 46mm, up to 24 hours of normal use and 10 hours outdoor workout (Apple Newsroom / Series 12 tech specs), starting at $399. Ultra 4 is the 49mm adventure SKU: up to 50 hours normal use, 84 hours Low Power, and 45 hours Max Extended Workout, plus Action.

The verdict

Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 — quote the two manufacturer sheets.

Why: Both launch on S11, Health Sensing System, and watchOS 27. The paid fork is Ultra’s 49mm titanium case, dual-frequency GPS, Action Button, 40m dive path, satellite radios, and 50 / 84 / 45-hour battery table versus Series 12’s 42/46mm everyday watch at $399.

Buy Apple Watch Series 12 if

You want the current Series health stack (S11, Health Sensing System, readiness) in a 42mm or 46mm case, and you do not need satellite, a 40m dive path, or Ultra’s multi-day battery table.

Buy Apple Watch Ultra 4 if

You want Apple’s current 49mm adventure watch: Grade 5 titanium, Action Button, dual-frequency GPS, satellite SOS/Messages/Find My, and Apple’s 50-hour normal-use / 45-hour Max Extended Workout claims.

Who each watch is for

Series 12 is the current everyday Apple Watch. Apple’s own compare language versus Ultra is size, brightness, and the all-day (24-hour) battery claim. Ceramic Shield 2 on aluminum is the 2026 glass story versus Series 11 Ion-X.

Ultra 4 is the current adventure Apple Watch. If you do not need the 49mm case, Action Button, dive computer path, dual-frequency GNSS, satellite radios, or the 50 / 84 / 45-hour table, you are shopping Series 12.

What’s shared (do not invent a chip war)

S11, 64GB, Health Sensing System, readiness (0–10), Audio Intelligence (Live Rewind and Siri Recap are late-2026 beta; require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later excluding iPhone 16e, per Series 12 Newsroom footnote 2), and Siri AI on watchOS 27 (English first; not initially in the EU on watchOS).

Battery and charging

Copy Apple’s mode names. Series 12: 24h normal / 38h Low Power / 10h outdoor workout; 15 minutes → up to 12 hours. Ultra 4: 50 / 84 / 18 / 25 / 45 hours; 15 minutes → up to 18 hours. Max Extended Workout is outdoor run/walk/hike with GPS every second — not a published triathlon or dive number.

GNSS, water, and satellite

This is the hardware fork. Series 12 is L1 GNSS and 50m swimproof. Ultra 4 is dual-frequency GNSS, 100m / 40m dive, and satellite. Do not upgrade Series 12 to “Ultra GPS” in prose.

Price

$399 vs $799 are Apple’s published US starting prices on 9 September 2026. Ceramic Series 12, Hermès, cellular plans, and bands change the ticket. Date any street price.

Frequently asked questions

Do Series 12 and Ultra 4 share a chip?

Yes. Apple’s Series 12 tech specs and Ultra 4 tech specs both list the S11 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor, 4-core Neural Engine, and 64GB. The adventure extras are not a chip upgrade.

Is Series 12 dual-frequency GPS?

Apple’s Series 12 spec sheet lists Precision L1 GPS (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, BeiDou). Ultra 4’s spec sheet lists precision dual-frequency GPS. Do not write L1+L5 on Series 12 unless Apple publishes it.

Does Series 12 have satellite messaging?

Not as built-in Ultra-class satellite hardware. Ultra 4’s spec sheet lists Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, and Find My via satellite. Series 12’s safety list on the spec sheet is Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Last Emergency Call, Check In, and related items — no satellite row.

What does watchOS 27 require?

Series 12 Newsroom (9 September 2026): watchOS 27 is available for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and requires iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) with iOS 27 or later. Both watches in this pair are on that list.
