Quick Answer

Both Support pages list a 10-core M5 CPU (4 super + 6 efficiency), 16-core Neural Engine, and 153 GB/s. The Air (Support 126320, 2026) is the 13.6-inch Liquid Retina 2560×1664 500-nit notebook: 8- or 10-core GPU, 16 GB unified floor, 512 GB base SSD, 53.8 Wh, up to 18 hours video streaming / 15 hours wireless web, Wi-Fi 7 + N1, Bluetooth 6, 12MP Center Stage, MagSafe 3 and two Thunderbolt 4, 2.7 lb / 1.23 kg. The 14-inch Pro.

The verdict

MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) or MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5) — quote the two manufacturer sheets.

Why: Current ‘do I need a Pro?’ hub. Caption is 13-inch Air M5 versus 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip — not M5 Pro or M5 Max. Both list an M5 10-core CPU (4 super + 6 efficiency), 16-core Neural Engine, and 153 GB/s. Air adds 8- or 10-core GPU, N1 / Wi-Fi 7 / Bluetooth 6, 53.8 Wh, and 2.7 lb. 14-inch Pro lists a 10-core GPU, Liquid Retina XDR with ProMotion, 72.4 Wh, up to 24 hours video streaming / 16 hours wireless web, SDXC, HDMI, three Thunderbolt 4, and 3.4 lb. No independent thermal benches on this page.

Who each Mac is for

13-inch Air M5 is the current everyday Apple notebook in this pair: lighter, smaller panel class, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7 + N1, and the 18/15-hour table.

14-inch MacBook Pro (base M5) is the current 14-inch Pro with the same M5 CPU class and a different job: XDR, ProMotion, HDMI, SDXC, a third Thunderbolt 4 port, 72.4 Wh, and the 24/16-hour table. If the configure page in your cart says M5 Pro, you left this comparison.

What’s shared (do not invent a chip war)

Both cited sheets list M5, a 10-core CPU (4 super + 6 efficiency), 16-core Neural Engine, 153 GB/s, MagSafe 3, and 12MP Center Stage. That is not permission to paste Air GPU options onto the Pro, or Pro XDR nits onto the Air.

Display and ports

This is the hardware fork. Air: 13.6-inch 500-nit Liquid Retina, two Thunderbolt 4. Pro: 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR, ProMotion, nano-texture option, SDXC, HDMI, three Thunderbolt 4. Copy Apple’s nits labels. Do not add a colorimeter column.

Battery and charging

Air: 53.8 Wh; up to 18 hours video streaming / 15 hours wireless web; 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max in the box. Pro: 72.4 Wh; up to 24 hours video streaming / 16 hours wireless web; MagSafe cable in the box and power adapter sold separately on Support 125405. Fast-charge thresholds differ (70W+ vs 96W+). These are Apple video-streaming / wireless-web claims.

Radios

Quote the split. Air M5 Support lists N1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. 14-inch M5 Pro Support lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. A later US sheet can be swapped in on verify day; this page follows 126320 and 125405 as accessed 19 September 2026.

Price

Neither cited Support page is used here as a US MSRP source. Date any apple.com configure price. A loaded Air can approach a base Pro before you add the Pro’s display and ports — that is checkout math, not a bench.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 14-inch side M5 Pro?

No. This page is 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base Apple M5 chip (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU on Support 125405). It is not the M5 Pro chip unless a sentence names that configure option.

Do they share a CPU layout?

On the cited sheets, both list a 10-core M5 CPU with 4 super cores and 6 efficiency cores, a 16-core Neural Engine, and 153 GB/s memory bandwidth. GPU options differ: Air lists 8-core or 10-core; 14-inch base M5 Pro lists 10-core GPU.

Which display is brighter?

Different panel classes. 13-inch Air M5: 500 nits Liquid Retina. 14-inch M5 Pro: Liquid Retina XDR with 1,000 nits SDR (outdoor), 1,000 nits sustained full-screen XDR, and 1,600 nits peak HDR, plus ProMotion up to 120 Hz. Those are Apple nits claims, not a lab meter.

Does the Air have HDMI or SD?

Not on Support 126320. The 13-inch Air lists MagSafe 3, a 3.5 mm jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The 14-inch Pro lists SDXC, HDMI, 3.5 mm, MagSafe 3, and three Thunderbolt 4.

Why does the Air list Wi-Fi 7 if the Pro is also M5?

Because the Support pages disagree by product, not by a bench we ran. 13-inch Air M5 lists Apple N1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. 14-inch M5 Pro Support lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Quote both rows.
