Who should skip it
- People who only browse and write. The 13-inch Air M5 hub is the quieter, lighter, cheaper desk pick.
- Leftover 14-inch M4 shoppers (same TB4 / 72.4Wh class, 512GB/2TB max, $1,599 launch). That is /laptops/macbook-pro-14-m4/.
- Buyers who need M5 Pro / M5 Max, Thunderbolt 5, or the March 2026 N1 wireless chip. That is a different Support family.
- 16-inch Pro shoppers. This hub is 14.2-inch / 1.55 kg only.
- Windows-only shops.
Key differentiators
- Liquid Retina XDR: 1000 nits sustained / 1600 nits peak HDR, 1000 nits SDR outdoor, 1,000,000:1 contrast, ProMotion 120Hz.
- Port set Air does not match: HDMI, SDXC, three Thunderbolt 4, MagSafe 3.
- OEM video claim up to 24 hours (vs Air’s 18). 72.4Wh vs Air’s 53.8Wh.
- Active cooling and a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers.
Caveats
- Locked to base M5. M5 Pro / M5 Max (Newsroom 2026-03-03) add different CPU/GPU, Thunderbolt 5, and N1. Do not merge those rows.
- March 2026 Newsroom says the base M5 14-inch now ships with 1TB standard at $1,699. Support 125405 still lists 512GB or 1TB. Date the floor you quote.
- Battery, nits, and AI-multiplier lines are Apple claims. No GadgetShowdown lab numbers.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with base M5 is Apple’s October 2025 actively cooled creator Mac. Support KB 125405 is the sheet this hub cites: 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU, 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR with ProMotion, HDMI and SDXC, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 72.4Wh pack, and a 3.4 lb (1.55 kg) aluminum chassis. Apple later announced M5 Pro and M5 Max (3 March 2026) and noted a 1TB / $1,699 floor for the base M5 14-inch. Those later chips are not this page.
Size + chip lock is 14-inch base M5. Leftover 14-inch M4, the 16-inch Pro, and M5 Pro / M5 Max boards are siblings.

Is this M5 Pro?
No. This hub is the 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU base M5. M5 Pro and M5 Max are a March 2026 family with different ports and wireless. Do not merge those tables.
What changed in March 2026 for the base M5?
Apple’s 3 March 2026 Newsroom says the 14-inch M5 now comes standard with 1TB and starts at $1,699. Launch day (15 October 2025) was $1,599 with a 512GB-class floor. Support 125405 still lists 512GB or 1TB — date the cell.
Air or Pro?
Air if you want fanless + 1.23 kg + $1,099. Pro if you want XDR, HDMI/SD, three Thunderbolt ports, and the 24-hour video claim. That is a spec-sheet fork, not a lab winner.
Does base M5 have Wi-Fi 7?
Support 125405 lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. N1 / Wi-Fi 7 is marketed on the M5 Pro/Max Newsroom post. Keep this row honest.
Is there a 60W minimum to charge?
No. Support 125405 does not print a charge-minimum. In the box is 70W; fast-charge is 96W or higher USB PD; 96W is CTO. An older draft of this hub invented 60W — that cell is gone.
