Apple Watch SE 3

SE 3 is Apple’s $249 Always-On Watch: S10, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, Fall/Crash Detection, and Siri AI — without Series 12’s Health Sensing System, ECG, Blood Oxygen, or 2,000-nit panel.

In short

SE 3 is Apple’s $249 Always-On Watch: S10, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, Fall/Crash Detection, and Siri AI — without Series 12’s Health Sensing System, ECG, Blood Oxygen, or 2,000-nit panel. Buy it for an iPhone daily driver that charges every night. Skip it if you need ECG or Ultra hardware.

Who it is for

  • iPhone owners who want Always-On, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, and Fall/Crash Detection without paying $399 for Series 12.
  • Parents using Apple Watch For Your Kids on a cellular SE 3 (features limited — see Apple’s footnotes).
  • SE 2 owners who want the S10, 64GB, Always-On up to 1,000 nits, fast charge, and watchOS 27 (SE 2 is off that OS list).
  • Buyers who will accept no ECG and no Blood Oxygen in exchange for the $249 start.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs ECG, Blood Oxygen, hypertension notifications, or readiness. Apple’s own compare module marks those as Series 12 (and Ultra) rows, not SE 3.
  • Buyers without a compatible iPhone. Support 125094 requires iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 26 or later; watchOS 27 needs iOS 27.
  • People who want Ultra adventure hardware: no Action Button, no satellite, no 100m / 40m dive path, no 3,000-nit panel.
  • Shoppers who want Health Sensing System or Audio Intelligence. Those are S11 / Series 12 / Ultra 4 stories.

Key differentiators

  • Lowest current Apple Watch start: $249 (US), with Always-On (SE 2 did not have Always-On at this brightness class).
  • S10 + 64GB + watchOS 27 — SE 3 is on Apple’s 2026 OS list; older SE 2 is not.
  • Sleep score and sleep-apnea notifications on a value SKU (region-limited).
  • Apple’s compare module is unusually honest about what is missing: ECG, Blood Oxygen, readiness, hypertension, Audio Intelligence.

Caveats

  • Every numeric battery and brightness line is an Apple claim. GadgetShowdown has not lab-tested SE 3.
  • No ECG and no Blood Oxygen are Apple omissions, not independent medical advice. Do not write “unsafe.”
  • Education pricing on apple.com has shown $229 — that is a program price, not a new MSRP.
  • Ion-X “4× more crack resistant than SE 2” is an Apple materials claim.

Overview

Apple Watch SE 3 is the September 2025 value Watch — and it is still the $249 rung next to Series 12 and Ultra 4 in Apple’s 2026 compare module. The physical product is a 40mm or 44mm aluminum watch with Ion-X glass, Digital Crown, side button, and a second-generation optical heart sensor. There is no Action Button and no electrical ECG path.

This hub exists so the SE vs Series fork can cite Support 125094 instead of guessing from retailer bullets. The first table is watches-v1.

We do not claim we wore this watch.

Display

Always-On Retina OLED + LTPO, 326 ppi, up to 1,000 nits / 2 nits minimum, Ion-X glass. 40mm is 324 × 394 (759 sq mm); 44mm is 368 × 448 (977 sq mm). Series 12’s compare peak is 2,000 nits; Ultra 4’s is 3,000. Do not write “as bright as Series 12.”

Health and sensors

Optical HR (second generation), wrist temperature, high/low HR notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, Medications, Mindfulness, Noise. No electrical heart sensor, no ECG app, no Blood Oxygen app, no Health Sensing System, no readiness.

Sleep tracking

Sleep app with stages, Sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications (18+, moderate-to-severe signs, not a diagnosis). 8 minutes of charge ≈ 8 hours of sleep tracking per Apple’s footnote.

Battery and charging (OEM table only)

Fast charge~80% in about 45 minutes; 15 min → up to 8h normal use; 8 min → up to 8h sleep tracking

Workouts

Support 125094 still gives dedicated running, hiking, cycling, and swimming blocks — including Race Route, Pacer, form metrics (not running power), U.S. park maps, FTP, and SWOLF. That is more sport depth than the “value” nickname implies. Keep sport_profiles short and put metric depth in extras.

Safety, payments, bands

Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, Backtrack, noise monitoring. Apple Pay and GymKit. One band in the box — Apple does not name the colorway per SKU. Cellular models list Family Setup / For Your Kids.

Software

watchOS 26-era launch; watchOS 27 supported. Siri AI appears on the 2026 compare module. Audio Intelligence does not.

Price and what not to invent

US start is $249. Do not invent Amazon averages or “we wore SE 3 for a week.” A future SE 3 vs Series 12 page should reuse these rows, not a new schema.

Frequently asked questions

Does SE 3 have ECG or Blood Oxygen?

No. Apple’s compare module marks ECG, Blood Oxygen, readiness, and hypertension notifications as not applicable. Newsroom’s ECG footnote excludes all SE models. Do not write that a watchOS 27 update adds those sensors.

Does SE 3 get watchOS 27 and Siri AI?

Yes. Apple’s Series 12 Newsroom lists SE 3 on watchOS 27. The SE 3 compare module lists Siri AI. Audio Intelligence stays a Series 12 / Ultra 4 (S11) row.

Is $249 a street price?

$249 is Apple’s published US starting price. Education pages have shown $229. Cellular, bands, and AppleCare are separate. Re-check apple.com on the day you quote a number.

Can kids use SE 3 without their own iPhone?

Cellular models support Apple Watch For Your Kids. Apple’s footnote says not all features are available in that setup. A parent iPhone still manages the watch.

Is SE 3 swimproof?

Apple rates it 50m under ISO 22810:2010 for shallow-water swimming. The footnote says not for scuba, waterskiing, or high-velocity water. There is no 6m snorkel depth gauge on the SE 3 compare module (Series 12 lists that extra).

Does SE 3 track sleep?

Yes. Support 125094 lists a Sleep app with stages, a Sleep score, and sleep-apnea notifications (region-limited). We have not measured overnight accuracy.
