Apple Watch Series 8 vs Apple Watch Ultra 4
Quick Answer
Series 8 (2022) is a 41mm or 45mm Always-On LTPO OLED watch with the S8 SiP, 32GB, up to 1000 nits, 352×430 (41mm) / 396×484 (45mm), L1 GPS, 50m + IP6X, ECG, Blood Oxygen, Crash Detection, and temperature sensing (Apple Support 102674: Series 8 or later). Apple Support lists up to 18 hours of battery. Ultra 4 (9 September 2026) is the 49mm Grade 5 titanium adventure SKU: S11, 64GB, Health Sensing System, dual-frequency GPS, Action Button, satellite, 100m /.
The verdict
Apple Watch Series 8 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 — quote the two manufacturer sheets.
Why: Series 8 is the 2022 41/45mm Always-On watch that brought Crash Detection to the Series line, with S8, 32GB, 1000 nits, L1 GPS, 50m + IP6X, ECG, and temperature sensing. It is not named on Apple’s watchOS 27 list (Series 9 or later, SE 3, Ultra 2 or later). Ultra 4 is the current 49mm adventure SKU on that list. Quote Apple’s list; this page does not invent an end-of-support date.
Buy Apple Watch Series 8 if
You already wear Series 8, ECG plus Crash/Fall Detection plus 50m swimproof still cover what you do, and you are not shopping for watchOS 27, dual-frequency GPS, satellite, or a 40m dive path.
Buy Apple Watch Ultra 4 if
You want Apple’s current 49mm adventure watch: Grade 5 titanium, Action Button, dual-frequency GPS, satellite SOS/Messages/Find My, Health Sensing System, and Apple’s 50-hour normal-use / 45-hour Max Extended Workout claims.

Who each watch is for
Series 8 is the 2022 everyday Apple Watch in 41mm and 45mm: Always-On at 1000 nits, S8 / 32GB, ECG, Blood Oxygen, Crash Detection, and temperature sensing as Apple documents it on Support 102674. If that listed set is enough, this page does not invent a reason to panic.
Ultra 4 is the current adventure Apple Watch. The comparison is case class, GNSS class, satellite, dive path, S11 / Health Sensing System, the 50-hour battery table, and Apple’s watchOS 27 named list.
watchOS 27 — quote Apple
Series 12 Newsroom, 9 September 2026: “watchOS 27 will be available for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later … and requires iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) with iOS 27 or later.” Series 8 is not on that sentence. Series 9 is.
Battery
Copy Apple’s mode names. Series 8: up to 18 hours; testing conducted by Apple in August 2022 (Support footnote 9). Ultra 4: 50 / 84 / 18 / 25 / 45 hours; 15 minutes → up to 18 hours. Max Extended Workout is outdoor run/walk/hike with GPS every second.
GNSS, water, and satellite
Series 8 is L1 GNSS and 50m + IP6X. Ultra 4 is dual-frequency GNSS, 100m / 40m dive, Action Button, and satellite. Do not upgrade Series 8 to “Ultra GPS” in prose.
Price
$799 is Apple’s published US starting price for Ultra 4 on 9 September 2026. Series 8 is discontinued; this page does not treat a refurb ticket as a fact.
Frequently asked questions
Does Series 8 get watchOS 27?
Apple’s Series 12 Newsroom (9 September 2026) says watchOS 27 will be available for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and requires iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) with iOS 27 or later. Series 8 is not on that list. This page quotes Apple.
Did Series 8 introduce Crash Detection?
Support 111848 lists Crash Detection with the high-g accelerometer (up to 256 g-forces with Fall Detection and Crash Detection). That is the Series-line generation Apple shipped Crash Detection on in 2022, alongside Apple Watch Ultra and SE (2nd generation) on their own Support pages. Ultra 4 also lists Crash Detection.
Does Series 8 have temperature sensing?
Apple Support 102674: Apple Watch Series 8 or later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE 3 can gather wrist temperature data while you sleep. The Ultra 4 spec-sheet footnote repeats Series 8 or later. Support 111848 itself does not print a temperature-sensor row; this article cites 102674 rather than inventing a cell on 111848.
Does Series 8 have an Action Button, satellite, or 40m dive?
No. Series 8 Support lists L1 GPS, 50m + IP6X, Digital Crown and side button. Ultra 4 lists precision dual-frequency GPS, Action Button, satellite SOS/Messages/Find My, 100m, and EN 13319 recreational scuba to 40m.
Does Series 8 have ECG?
Yes. Support 111848 lists the electrical heart sensor (ECG app). Apple’s Ultra 4 footnote: ECG app is available on Series 4 and later, excluding Apple Watch SE models. Region and age limits apply.
