Sony WF-1000XM5
XM5 is last-gen 1000X, not a deleted SKU: QN2e, Dynamic Driver X, LDAC/LC3, named multipoint, and the same 8 / 12 / 24-hour class table XM6 still prints.

In short
XM5 is last-gen 1000X, not a deleted SKU: QN2e, Dynamic Driver X, LDAC/LC3, named multipoint, and the same 8 / 12 / 24-hour class table XM6 still prints. Buy leftover XM5 for the Sony codec stack at last-gen pricing — not because GadgetShowdown measured it quieter than XM6. The $299.99 figure is Sony Electronics’ July 2023 US MSRP; re-check the store.
Who it is for
- Buyers who still want Sony’s printed SBC / AAC / LDAC / LC3 list and named Multipoint Connection without paying current XM6 store list.
- People who will use Sony | Sound Connect for DSEE Extreme, Ambient Sound, Speak-to-Chat, and 360 Reality Audio.
- Shoppers who accept IPX4 on the buds and a case Sony explicitly says is not water resistant.
Who should skip it
- Anyone shopping the current Sony flagship story (QN3e / Adaptive NC Optimizer merchandising). That is XM6.
- iPhone owners who want Hearing Aid. Not published on this spec sheet.
- Tip-haters. XM5 is closed, dynamic, with Noise Isolation tips — not an open-ear stem.
- Readers who treat last-gen as abandoned. Discontinued-feeling merchandising ≠ delete the hub.
Key differentiators
- QN2e + Integrated Processor V2 + Dynamic Driver X is the XM5 processor/driver story. XM6’s QN3e claim is defined against this chip — keep both hubs.
- Printed codec list and Multipoint Connection: same first-table shape as XM6.
- US product page states the charging case is not water resistant (IPX4 footnote). That sentence is clearer than XM6’s omitted case rating.
- Launch MSRP $299.99 (24 July 2023 Sony Electronics). Store list later drifted — re-check.
Caveats
- Every numeric battery hour and “best noise canceling” line is a Sony claim. GadgetShowdown has not lab-tested XM5.
- electronics.sony.com on 19 September 2026 showed a $329.99 “original” / $279.99 sale on the Black SKU. That is not the July 2023 $299.99 launch MSRP. Date both; re-check.
- Hearing features are not published as Hearing Aid.
- Sony product photography is not hosted here.

Overview
WF-1000XM5 is the July 2023 sealed 1000X earbud. Sony’s own framing at launch was “For The Music” plus QN2e, Integrated Processor V2, and Dynamic Driver X. The physical product is a closed, dynamic in-ear with Noise Isolation tips and a USB-plus-Qi case the US spec sheet weighs at 1.38 oz.
This hub exists so later earbud writers can clone one honest last-gen record. XM6 does not retire XM5. The first spec table is earbuds-v1. Comparison URLs stay on their own -vs- slugs. This page’s public path is locked at /earbuds/sony-wf-1000xm5/.
We do not claim we wore these. Where Sony’s 2023 press says “best noise-canceling,” we repeat the claim and the dated footnote.
Fit, tips, and form factor
XM5 is a sealed / closed, dynamic in-ear. What’s in the box: Noise Isolation Earbud Tips. Bud dimensions are not published on the US spec sheet. Weight is approx. 0.21 oz ×2 including M tips (≈ 6.0 g class). Case 2.54 × 1.57 × 1.04 in.
ANC, transparency, and spatial (OEM claims only)
Copy Sony’s names. Do not invent dB.
- QN2e + Integrated Processor V2 + Multi Noise Sensor on ANC.
- Ambient Sound + Quick Attention on transparency.
- 360 Reality Audio / Android 13 spatial footnotes on spatial.
- Speak-to-Chat is a product-footnote extra.
Battery and charging (OEM table only)
| Mode (Sony’s words) | XM5 claim |
|---|---|
| Music, NC ON | Max 8 hrs |
| Music, NC OFF | Max 12 hrs |
| Talk, NC ON | Max 6 hrs |
| Talk, NC OFF | Max 7 hrs |
| With case (store) | Up to 24 hours |
| Bud charge | Approx. 1.5 hrs |
| Case USB charge | Approx. 2 hrs |
| Quick charge (store FAQ) | ~3 minutes ≈ 1 hour |
In the box: case, USB cable, Noise Isolation tips, warranty card, reference guide. Qi on the case; pad sold separately.
ANC, fit, and battery
anc, fit_system, and battery_buds stay filled. XM5’s IPX4 footnote is more explicit about excluded holes than a bare “IPX4” cell — quote it on vs-pages.
Codecs, Bluetooth, and switching
Bluetooth 5.3; SBC, AAC, LDAC, LC3; Multipoint Connection: Yes. Same first-table shape as XM6. Do not write “XM6 invented LDAC.”
Hearing features and what not to invent
Not published as Hearing Aid. Keep the key.
Software, Find, and compatibility
Sony | Sound Connect. Assistant/Alexa footnotes are Android-app extras. No Find My / UWB on the spec sheet.
Price and SKUs
US launch is $299.99 (Sony Electronics, 24 July 2023). Re-check. Finishes at launch: Black and Silver; later merchandising includes Smoky Pink.
Do not invent scores or hands-on weeks. A winner against XM6 is a future /earbuds/sony-wf-1000xm6-vs-sony-wf-1000xm5/ page.

Frequently asked questions
Why keep an XM5 hub after XM6?
Old-vs-old. The schema says last-gen flagships stay hubs. XM6’s QN3e “3× QN2e” sentence is undefined if this page does not exist.
Is the battery table different from XM6?
The US spec sheets both print Max 8 hrs NC ON / 12 hrs NC OFF for music. Talk differs: XM5 6h / 7h versus XM6 5h / 5.5h. Case weight and size differ (1.38 oz and 2.54 × 1.57 × 1.04 in here). Do not write “identical 24-hour product” without quoting both sheets.
What was the launch price?
$299.99 USD on Sony Electronics’ 24 July 2023 press note. Re-check. The US store on 19 September 2026 showed a different original/sale pair — do not silently overwrite the launch figure.
Is the case water resistant?
No. Sony’s US product IPX4 footnote says the charging case is not water resistant. The buds are IPX4 equivalent with hole exclusions.
Did Sony publish Hearing Aid?
Not on the spec sheet we pulled. Keep `hearing_health` as Not published. Do not copy Apple’s FDA sentence.
Does XM5 have LC3?
Yes — the US spec sheet lists SBC, AAC, LDAC, LC3. Do not invent aptX.
Is Speak-to-Chat on the spec table?
Not as a Yes cell on the support specifications table. It is in the US product-page footnotes, same pattern as XM6.
