- Android-first buyers who want LDAC, SSC, or a first-class Google / Samsung app. Apple lists Bluetooth use on non-Apple devices with limited functionality.
- Buyers who need stem volume swipe and wireless charging on the $129 box. Those are the $149 Wireless Charging Case extras.
- Anyone who wants a sealed in-ear and the longest Apple ANC table. That is AirPods Pro 3 ($249), not this hub.
Key differentiators
- ANC is on both SKUs — the 2024 AirPods 4 split (ANC vs no ANC) is gone. The remaining fork is USB-C-only 4h / 20h versus wireless-case 5h / 22h plus volume swipe and a Find My speaker.
- Newsroom / product: redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ; open-ear ANC “up to 1.5×” / “up to 50 percent more” vs AirPods 4 with ANC (IEC 60268-24 footnote). Treat as Apple claims.
- IP57 on buds and case (spec footnote). Live Translation and Siri AI sit on the spec sheet; Hearing Aid does not.

Caveats
- Every numeric battery hour, 1.5× / 50 percent ANC line, and “industry’s best open-ear ANC” sentence is an Apple claim. GadgetShowdown has not lab-tested AirPods 5. Do not invent dB.
- Siri AI is a beta in iOS 27, English first, and Newsroom says it will not be initially available in the EU on iOS / iPadOS / watchOS. Live Translation is beta and region/language limited.
- Hearing Aid / Test / Protection are not on the 2026-09-19 spec pull. Do not invent them because Pro 2 / Pro 3 have them.

Overview
AirPods 5 is the September 2026 open-ear stem. Apple’s own framing is “best-in-class open-ear Active Noise Cancellation”: H2, a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture, next-generation Adaptive EQ, Adaptive Audio, Live Translation, and Siri AI. The physical product is still a tip-less short stem in a USB-C case that Apple now rates IP57 with the buds. Both US prices include ANC. The $149 box adds a longer battery table, stem volume swipe, a Find My speaker, and Watch / Qi charging.
This hub exists so later earbud writers can clone one honest device record instead of re-deriving AirPods 5 from vs-page drafts. The first spec table is earbuds-v1 — the same keys belong on AirPods 1, Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Sony WF-1000XM5, and Pixel Buds Pro. It is not a sitewide gadget schema and it is not watches-v1. Comparison URLs stay on their own -vs- slugs under /earbuds/…. This page’s public path is locked at /earbuds/airpods-5/.
We do not claim we wore these on a commute. Where Apple uses superlatives (“industry’s best ANC in an open-ear design,” “up to 1.5×” / “up to 50 percent more” versus AirPods 4 with ANC), we repeat the claim and point at the Newsroom IEC 60268-24 footnote.
Fit, tips, and form factor
AirPods 5 is an open-ear stem. The spec sheet lists no tip sizes. That is the fit story versus AirPods Pro 3, which is a sealed in-ear with five foam-infused tip sizes.
For comparison writers: do not write “new shell dimensions versus AirPods 4.” Apple reprinted 30.2 × 18.3 × 18.1 mm and 4.3 g per bud, and 46.2 × 50.1 × 21.2 mm for the case. Case weight is 32.3 g (base) / 34.7 g (wireless) — the same published pair as AirPods 4’s USB-C vs speaker case. Quote both sheets; internals (multiport architecture, battery table, IP57) are the generation change.
ANC, transparency, and spatial (OEM claims only)
Copy Apple’s names. Do not invent dB.
- ANC + Adaptive Audio on the first table, both SKUs. Product / compare “up to 1.5× vs AirPods 4 with ANC” and Newsroom “up to 50 percent more” stay labeled as claims. IEC 60268-24 is Apple’s footnote.
- Transparency, Conversation Awareness on the transparency row. Newsroom’s “more natural” Transparency line is a claim.
- Personalized Spatial Audio + Adaptive EQ on the spatial row. TrueDepth profile required; compatible content only.
- Voice Isolation and studio-quality recording sit with the microphones extra/detail — they are not a substitute for a codec list.
A Sony page keeps the same anc key and writes QN3e / Adaptive NC Optimizer. A first-gen AirPods page writes No. An AirPods 4 base page writes No for ANC and splits the $179 SKU in extras.

ANC, fit, and battery
anc, fit_system, and battery_buds are earbuds-v1 rows: every later earbud page should fill them, even when the OEM only publishes “IPX4” or “not listed.”
AirPods 5’s fit is the tip-less stem + IP57 story. Battery is the 4 / 6 / 20 versus 5 / 7 / 22 split. Hearing Aid is why Pro 3 has a 10-hour Transparency row — that row does not exist here; do not invent it.
Codecs, Bluetooth, and switching
Apple printed Bluetooth 5.3 and used AAC tracks in the battery footnote. It did not print LDAC, LC3, or SSC on the spec sheet we pulled. Keep codecs and write “not published.” Automatic switching is the Apple Account behavior, not a two-device Android multipoint toggle — keep multipoint and say so.
Hearing features and what not to invent
hearing_health belongs on the first table because later Pro 2 / Pro 3 / (maybe) other OEM pages need the same slot. This hub writes not published. Compare’s Hearing Health row is Pro-only on the 2026-09-19 pull.
FDA authorization, 18+, mild-to-moderate, region lists: those sentences belong on Pro hubs. Live Translation and Siri AI are extras because they are Apple Intelligence + iPhone software, not a driver spec.
Software, Find My, and compatibility
Full features: latest Apple OS family. Find My speaker is the wireless case. Apple’s 2026 footnote on the spec sheet we pulled says Find My functionality requires iOS 27 or later — quote it, do not invent an older floor.
Camera remote is “latest firmware + latest OS” on this spec pull (AirPods 4 Support still names iOS 26). Head gestures are Siri Interactions.
Price and SKUs
US start is $129 / $149 (Newsroom, 9 September 2026). Stores from Friday 18 September 2026. Engraving is free at Apple. No Support “year introduced” article was on the pull — use the Newsroom date.
Do not invent independent scores, Amazon star averages, or “we wore them for a week.” If you need a winner against AirPods 4, Pro 3, or XM6, that is a future /earbuds/…-vs-…/ page — this hub only describes one named product.

Why is there one hub for $129 and $149?
Apple sold two case SKUs of the same named model. Schema rule: two case SKUs of the same named product share one hub. Both boxes have ANC. The extras table (`sku_split`) and the battery / wireless-charging / controls rows carry the USB-C vs Wireless Charging Case split.
Do both AirPods 5 boxes have ANC?
Yes. That is the generation change versus AirPods 4, where only the $179 SKU had ANC. AirPods 5 at $129 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149 both list Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness.

What does “1.5× more ANC” mean in decibels?
Apple did not print a dB figure on the pages we pulled. The product / compare line is “up to 1.5× more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation.” Newsroom says “up to 50 percent more external noise” and footnotes IEC 60268-24 (July 2026). We repeat the claim. We do not convert it into a dB chart.
Does Siri AI work in the EU?
Newsroom / spec footnotes say Siri AI is a beta in iOS 27, available in English to start, and will not be initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Live Translation is separately region- and language-limited. Re-check apple.com/apple-intelligence on the day you quote availability.
Does the $129 model have volume swipe?
No. Force sensor with volume swipe is listed only for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case — Newsroom calls it a first for the open-ear form factor. The base SKU uses the force sensor without swipe.
Does AirPods 5 work without an iPhone?
As Bluetooth headphones, yes, with limited functionality. Live Translation, Siri AI, Personalized Spatial Audio, Find My, and automatic switching sit inside Apple’s OS matrix. Do not describe AirPods 5 as a first-class Android bud.
Did Apple publish a codec list?
Not on the AirPods 5 spec sheet we pulled on 19 September 2026. Battery footnotes use 256 kbps AAC test tracks. Keep the codecs row and write “not published” rather than inventing LDAC.
Which colors does AirPods 5 ship in?

Is this a swim bud? Is the case MagSafe?
No and no. IP57 is Apple’s non-water-sports rating and is not permanent. The wireless case is USB-C + Apple Watch charger + Qi-certified chargers. The spec sheet does not print MagSafe (that word stays on Pro cases).
