Key differentiators
- First Apple true-wireless stem. W1, optical sensors, automatic connect language on 111855. That is the 2016 job-to-be-done — not ANC.
- Double-tap to activate Siri. Not Hey Siri. Keep that distinction; it is the cleanest old-vs-old sentence versus AirPods 2.
- Lightning Charging Case only at launch. Wireless Charging Case (Support 111860, A1938, 2019) was later sold separately and works with AirPods 1 and 2.
- Battery: up to 5 hours; more than 24 hours with the case; 15 minutes ≈ 3 hours. Bluetooth is printed without a 5.x version on this sheet.
Caveats
- Always say AirPods (1st generation) in the product name, H1, and first sentence. “AirPods” alone now reads as the current stem on apple.com.
- No ANC, no IP published, no Hearing Aid. Keep every earbuds-v1 key. Do not delete rows because 2016 predates those names.
- Bluetooth is “Bluetooth,” not Bluetooth 5.0, on Support 111855. Do not backfill 5.0 from the AirPods 2 sheet.
- This is the Megg old-vs-old example. Skipping it because Pro 3 exists is a schema miss.

Overview
AirPods (1st generation) is the 2016 open-ear stem — Apple’s first true-wireless earbud. Apple’s own framing on Support 111855 is “Wireless. Effortless. Magical.”: W1, automatic connect, double-tap Siri, and a Lightning Charging Case. There are no silicone tips, no ANC, no Transparency, no Hey Siri, and no IP rating on the sheet we pulled. Always say 1st generation. This is the Megg old-vs-old example: a discontinued SKU still gets a full earbuds-v1 hub.
This hub exists so later earbud writers can clone one honest device record instead of treating 2016 hardware as a footnote on AirPods 2. The first spec table is earbuds-v1 — the same keys belong on AirPods Pro 3, Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Sony WF-1000XM5, and Pixel Buds Pro. It is not a sitewide gadget schema and it is not watches-v1. We do not claim we wore these on a commute or a run. Where Apple omits a Bluetooth version or an IP code, we keep the key and write “not published.”

AirPods (1st generation) is an open-ear long stem. Support 111855’s box is buds, Charging Case, Lightning to USB cable, and documentation — no tips.
Dimensions are printed 16.5 × 18.0 × 40.5 mm per bud, 4 g. AirPods 2 prints 40.5 × 16.5 × 18.0 mm / 4 g — same box, different axis order. Quote the sheet you are on. The case is 44.3 × 21.3 × 53.5 mm, 38 g.

ANC, fit, and battery
anc, fit_system, and battery_buds are earbuds-v1 rows: every later earbud page should fill them, even when the OEM only publishes “not listed.”
AirPods (1st generation) fit is the no-tip long stem with no published IP. Battery is the 5 / more-than-24 table. ANC is the explicit No. If a later agent deletes those keys because 2016 is “simple,” the category schema is broken.
Codecs, Bluetooth, and switching
Apple printed Bluetooth without a 5.x version on Support 111855. It used AAC tracks in the August 2016 battery footnote. It did not print LDAC, LC3, or SSC. Keep codecs and write “not published.” Keep bluetooth as the unversioned string — do not copy 5.0 from AirPods 2.
Seamless switching and one-tap setup (iCloud + listed OS) are the 111855 highlight lines. That is not a named Android multipoint toggle — keep multipoint and say so.
Hearing features and what not to invent
Hearing Aid is not on AirPods (1st generation). Keep hearing_health and write “Not published on the spec sheet (accessed 2026-09-19).” Apple’s later footnotes say Hearing Test / Aid / Protection are AirPods Pro 2 and later.
Accessibility on 111855 lists Live Listen (iOS 12+ footnote) and Assistive Switch Control. That is not Hearing Aid. No medical advice.
Software, Find My, and compatibility
Launch floors on 111855: iOS 10, watchOS 3, macOS Sierra. iCloud for one-tap setup. Support 111855 does not list U1, Find My, a case speaker, or a lanyard loop. Do not copy later Find My language onto this extras table as 2016 hardware.
W1 routes audio when one or both buds are in-ear (optical sensors + motion accelerometer). Speech accelerometer + beamforming mics are the call path. Double-tap is Siri, not a play/pause force sensor.
Price and SKUs
US launch is $159 (December 2016 availability; announced 7 September 2016). Identify year introduced 2016. Discontinued. Used / refurbished / gift-drawer remains the live market. That is why this Megg old-vs-old hub stays.
